Have you ever tried to lose weight by eating as little as possible? You are definitely not alone. Almost every person I have worked with one-on-one has attempted this at some stage, and honestly, I have too.

A lot of people start a weight loss journey believing hunger is part of the process. They convince themselves they need to survive on salads, skip meals, ignore cravings, and constantly feel “disciplined” to see results. At first, you can feel motivated because the scale might move quickly, but eventually, the exhaustion catches up. Energy drops, cravings become stronger, moods become worse, and food starts taking up far too much mental space.

What I’ve learned after working with clients over the years is that restricting yourself to the point of misery is not a strategy; it is a setup for burnout. Real, sustainable weight loss happens when your body is properly nourished, your meals are balanced, and your habits are realistic enough to maintain long-term. You should not feel like you are constantly fighting yourself just to be healthy.

Here’s how I guide my clients to lose weight without feeling deprived:

1. Make Protein a Priority

This is one of the very first things I talk to clients about because it genuinely changes everything.

Protein helps keep you full for longer, reduces cravings between meals, supports muscle recovery, and helps your body maintain lean muscle while losing fat. This matters because the goal is not simply to lose weight as quickly as possible. The goal is to improve body composition, energy levels, strength, and overall health sustainably.

The good news is that it does not need to be complicated. You do not need expensive supplements or perfectly calculated meals. Most people simply need to become more intentional about including a protein source consistently throughout the day.

Eggs, chicken, fish, Greek yoghurt, cottage cheese, lentils, lean mince, tofu, and beans can all work well depending on your preferences and lifestyle.

A simple starting point is aiming to fill roughly a quarter of your plate with protein at each meal. This small adjustment alone often helps people feel more satisfied and less likely to snack constantly later in the day.

2. Stop Treating Carbs Like an Enemy

I cannot say this enough: carbohydrates are not the problem.

Over the years, carbs have become one of the most feared food groups in the weight loss space, which has left many people unnecessarily anxious about foods they genuinely enjoy. The reality is that your body needs carbohydrates for energy, brain function, training performance, and daily functioning.

What matters more is the type of carbohydrates you eat and the overall balance of your meals.

Highly processed carbs like sugary cereals, pastries, sweets, and heavily refined snacks tend to digest quickly and leave people feeling hungry again not long afterwards. This can lead to blood sugar crashes, cravings, low energy, and constant snacking throughout the day.

Highly processed carbs like sugary cereals, pastries, sweets, and heavily refined snacks tend to digest quickly and leave people feeling hungry again not long afterwards. This can lead to blood sugar crashes, cravings, low energy, and constant snacking throughout the day.

Slow-digesting carbohydrates tend to support appetite control and more stable energy levels. Foods like oats, sweet potatoes, brown rice, fruit, legumes, and whole-grain breads digest more gradually and help people feel fuller for longer.

One of the biggest things clients notice when they start eating more balanced meals is how much calmer their appetite becomes. The constant cycle of extreme hunger, cravings, overeating, and guilt usually starts settling down once the body is being fueled properly.

If you are looking for balanced meal ideas that focus on whole foods without being overly restrictive, my Whole Foods Recipes are a great place to start.

3. Volume Matters More Than People Think

One of the reasons restrictive diets feel so difficult is that meals are often physically small.

People will eat a tiny salad for lunch, feel virtuous for about an hour, and then wonder why they are starving by late afternoon. Feeling constantly hungry makes consistency incredibly difficult because your body will eventually push back.

This is where high-volume foods become helpful.

Vegetables, fruits, soup, potatoes, oats, and whole foods with high fibre content help create meals that are satisfying, without needing to be excessively high in calories. Adding more colour, fibre, and variety to meals usually helps people feel far more satisfied both physically and mentally. Weight loss becomes much easier when meals actually feel substantial instead of feeling like punishment.

4. Weight Loss Should Still Feel Like Living

One of the biggest signs that an approach is unsustainable is when your entire life starts revolving around food rules.

Healthy eating should support your life, not isolate you from it. You should still be able to enjoy meals with family, go out with friends, celebrate special occasions, and eat foods you genuinely love without feeling consumed by guilt afterwards.

The clients who tend to maintain progress long-term are rarely the ones following the most extreme plans. More often, they are the people who learn how to build balanced habits they can realistically maintain even during stressful or busy seasons of life.

That’s what sustainable health looks like.

If you are tired of constantly starting over, swinging between restrictions and overeating, or feeling confused about what healthy eating should look like, you don’t have to figure it out alone.

Sustainable weight loss isn’t misery. It’s not about starving yourself or cutting out every food you enjoy. It’s more about learning how to fuel your body in a way that supports your goals while still fitting your real life.
